Emmie is the University of Wisconsin-Madison's music magazine...

...put out by the Wisconsin Union Directorate's (WUD) Publications Committee. Four issues of 3,000 copies each are printed every year and distributed around campus and the city of Madison, home to 40,000 students ages 18-25. The magazine is generously given a budget from WUD, which allows us to keep the magazine free to the public. The dedicated, all-student staff spends hours preparing each issue because we love music. Emmie is not only about making a great magazine for our audience—it also provides a rich learning experience for the staff. In addition to our magazine, we host a weekly radio show on WSUM, 91.7fm Madison (www.wsum.org) from 8-9pm on Sunday nights where we play and talk about the music we feature in the magazine and the Madison music scene. We are also known to host parties and concerts so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Weekly staff meetings for Spring 2009 semester: Thursdays @ 8pm on TITU

Become a Part of Emmie!

We welcome new student staff members at any point in the year. Please email the editor or come to a weekly meeting. You can get free CDs, concert tickets, have the opportunity to interview your favorite artists and get to know and work with fellow music-loving UW students.

The time commitment for our writers varies from person to person. No one is required to contribute to every issue and there is no minimum contribution. If you have an idea for an article, you can pitch your idea to the editor-in-chief and at weekly meetings or through email. You will then work on your idea with an editor who can help decide on an appropriate angle and word limit. Articles range from short reviews to longer reviews to features such as interviews or researched pieces to group articles to point-counterpoints to columns. The possibilities are endless.

We have weekly meetings, which everyone is encouraged to attend, although it is possible to write for the magazine even if you can't make it to the meetings. At the meetings, we often discuss relevant business, share ideas, and hand out CDs to be reviewed. After the meetings, the editors often conference with writers for revisions and brainstorming.

It is also possible to contribute if writing isn't your cup of tea. We have layout, advertising, promotion, distribution, and web work that always needs to be done.
